What is almond eye aesthetics and why is it done?

Just as the beauty of our eyes is important, the shape of our eyelids and eyebrows surrounding our eyes is just as important. The shape of each person’s eyelids is different from each other. Some of us have slanted eyes, some of us have droopy eyes, and some of us have downward slant.

Our eyelids have an inner corner and an outer corner. If the outer corner is lower than the inner corner, this leads to a tired and sad appearance and often does not parallel the person’s emotions. We call this “negative tilt” or “negative eye angle”. These people often say, “Are you bored?”, you look very tired, what happened?” They are exposed to questions such as:

The purpose of almond eye aesthetics is to change the “negative eye angle” that causes this tired and sad expression to “positive eye angle”. In other words, it is to change this tired and sad expression in the eyes by moving the outer corner of our eyelids upwards and to give the attractive “star-eye” appearance, which is available in most of our domestic and foreign artists or actors.

This process can be given different names. Other names of almond eye aesthetics (this is the most commonly used term) excluding special expressions licensed by some physicians are “cat-eye”, “star-eye”, “eye-lift”. can also be found. Medically, it is referred to as “lateral canthoplasty”.

You can find information on how this surgery is performed, which other auxiliary procedures will provide better results, how long the procedure lasts and how the recovery period is in our other headings.

What is eye angle?

Our eyes have an inner corner and an outer corner. The red side where our eye spring is located is the inner corner of our eye, its name in medicine is “medial canthus”. The other junction point of our lower and upper eyelids is the outer corner, that is, the “lateral canthus”. As it is explained in the pictures on our page, when we draw an imaginary line from these two points, we call the angle that it will make with a line parallel to the ground, “eye angle”.

The eye angle can be 0 degrees (neutral), positive or negative. (see Figure) While most people have a neutral or very close eye angle, some of us have positive eye angles by innate luck. This feature awakens the subconscious feelings of self-confidence, attractiveness, vitality, likability and trust to the other party during communication. However, if our eye angle is neutral or negative, this unfortunately creates a feeling of introversion, tiredness and boredom on the other side. The procedure that allows to change the eye angle from negative to positive is “almond eye aesthetics”.

What are the benefits of almond eye aesthetics for us?

Almond eye aesthetics provides vitality, attractiveness and self-confidence to our eyes. It allows the negative expression in our eyes to be translated into positive feelings. It allows us to feel more attractive, more energetic and happier when we look at ourselves in the mirror. In our communication with people, it helps us to spend our energy better, to look more alive and beautiful and to feel happier. It increases the shine in our eyes.

Is almond eye aesthetics permanent?

One of the most frequently asked questions about almond eye aesthetics is whether this procedure is permanent. Obviously, the answer to this question is related to the technique of Almond Eye Aesthetics. The “Lateral Cantoplasty” procedure, with its medical name, can be performed with several different techniques.

Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery physician Dr. Cagil Meriç Erenoğlu uses the permanent lateral canthal tendon reinsertion technique while performing almond eye aesthetics. In this technique, the inferior ligament is moved to its new place above and the eyelid elements are repositioned where they should be. In the technique, the eye edge is moved 1 or 2 degrees higher than it should be, taking into account the share of the tissues to release themselves, and within a few weeks, the eyes come to the desired position with the reduction of edema and the settlement of the tissues.

In the techniques where the rope suspension or lateral canthal tendon is only stretched, the procedure may not be permanent. After a while, the eyes can return to their original position.

Is there any risk of almond eye aesthetics?

As with any medical procedure, almond eye aesthetics has its own risks. Although it is a relatively minor procedure, its risks may include infections, redness of the eyes, itching (conjunctivitis). Smoking and bad habits can delay wound healing. After almond eye aesthetics, there may be swelling and bruises on the eyelids for a while. One of the risks that may be encountered in this procedure is that the valves may return to their old position and require surgery again, despite the permanent technique.

What kind of anesthesia is applied in almond eye aesthetics?

Almond eye aesthetics is a method applied under local anesthesia and sedation (soothing). It is applied this way unless it is combined with other procedures that require general anesthesia. After the procedure, the person can be discharged after a follow-up period of approximately 2 hours. The procedure is painless, convenient and comfortable. Pain after discharge can be relieved with prescribed oral painkillers.

What awaits me after almond eye surgery?

Almond eye aesthetics is a procedure that takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. It is performed under local anesthesia and sedation. After the operation, we rest our patient for 2 hours during follow-up. Then our patient is discharged with his prescription. It is normal to have some pain in the first 3 days. These pains respond well to the painkillers we prescribe in pill form. He needs to take antibiotics for 5 days. There are also eye drops. It needs to be dripped 4 times a day for 3 days. We recommend our patient to rest at home, we recommend him to lie with his head high (with 2-3 pillows or sitting down) so that the swelling is not too much. 3 days after the procedure, our patient comes to the control and the bands are opened. If the edema has decreased, we do not re-taping, but if it persists, we tape it again and keep the tapes for 4 more days. On the 7th day, we have our 2nd control and completely remove the tapes. During this one-week period, we restrict physical activities a little. While it may take up to a month for the swelling to go away completely, it may take a few months for the result to take its final shape.

Which techniques are used when applying almond eye aesthetics?

Almond eye aesthetics can be applied with several different techniques. These are methods such as cantopexy (suspending the lateral canthus), rope suspension, and lateral canthoplasty. The connective tissue, which we call the lateral canthal tendon, which determines the angle of our eye corner, adheres to the inside of the eyeball. This tie can be suspended temporarily or it can be temporarily removed with a rope hanger. However, in these techniques, the eye can return to its original state after a while. The most permanent of these techniques is the lateral canthoplasty technique, in which the eye angle is increased by moving this ligament to its new location.

To whom can almond eye aesthetics be applied?

The purpose of this process is to increase the vitality, attractiveness and self-confidence in the eyes by increasing the eye angle. Therefore, it is applied to people with low eye angle or neutral. It can be applied to anyone over the age of 18, but it is an aesthetic procedure that is more common among young people.

Almond eye aesthetics is mostly preferred by women, but it is also performed for men. When applied to men, the angle is increased less than that of women.

In advancing age, drooping of the upper and lower eyelids also occurs, and upper and lower eyelid aesthetics may be required to eliminate these signs of aging. Almond eye procedure can also be applied together with these eyelid procedures, which we call “blepharoplasty”.

In short, almond eye aesthetics can be applied to anyone who wants to beautify their eyes, increase their beauty and reflect themselves more energetically and confidently.

Can almond eye aesthetics be applied together with upper and lower eyelid aesthetics?

Yeah. We need eyelid aesthetics, which we call “blepharoplasty”, in cases such as weight, drooping and looseness of our eyelids that develop with age. In these procedures, excess tissues are removed, the angle of view is increased and a more lively and youthful expression is provided. Almond eye aesthetics can be applied simultaneously with the upper and lower eyelid aesthetics in the same session.

In addition, there is no harm in applying almond eye aesthetics together with other aesthetic procedures such as face lift, rhinoplasty, and oil injection rich in stem cells.

How to perfect almond eye aesthetic results?

When changing the eye angle, the structures around the eye should also be considered. These are the eyebrows, forehead, temples and cheekbones, and the nose.

Along with almond eye aesthetics, we can often apply temple stretching and eyebrow lifting operations together. Lifting low eyebrows provides more holistic and excellent results. Again, the “ponytail aesthetic”, which has gained popularity especially in recent years, is named after the stretching of the eyebrows and temples by stretching the hair backwards.

The beauty of the forehead area, the elimination of wrinkles and the creation of a baby-like bow on the forehead are also methods that increase the success of almond eye aesthetics.

Elimination of the volume depletion in the cheekbones is also beneficial in providing more attractive looks by beautifying the area around the eyes. It is generally done with fat injection and filling.

A beautiful nose is one of the sine qua non for the emergence of beautiful eyes. We can say that rhinoplasty also increases the success of almond eye aesthetics.
